If you’ve ever wondered whether hypnotherapy involves me clicking my fingers and making you cluck like a chicken… you’re not alone.

A lot of people come to hypnotherapy with images of Derren Brown or Paul McKenna in mind; stage hypnosis, loss of control, doing something mildly embarrassing in front of a crowd.

Let me put your mind at ease straight away:

That’s not what we’re doing here.

What is hypnotherapy?

Hypnotherapy is a way of working with your mind while you’re in a deeply relaxed, focused state, often called trance.

And here’s the bit most people don’t expect:

All hypnosis is self-hypnosis.

I don’t take over your mind or make you do anything against your will. Couldn’t even if I wanted to. What I do do, is guide you into a state that your brain already naturally enters (think daydreaming, getting lost in a film, or driving somewhere and not remembering part of the journey).

You’re still aware.
You’re still in control.
You can come out of it whenever you want.

My role as a hypnotherapist in the Cheshire area is to create an experience that feels safe, useful, and engaging enough that you want to stay with it.

What happens in a hypnotherapy session?

We always start with a conversation.

Before any hypnosis happens, I want to understand what’s going on for you and what you’d like to change. That might feel quite similar to a counselling session; if you’re curious about that side of things, you can read more about counselling.

Then, when we move into hypnosis:

  • I guide you into a relaxed state (this is where my super-relaxing “hypno voice” appears, which can surprise people who know me!)
  • You begin to focus inward, noticing your body and breathing
  • I watch for signs you’ve entered trance (changes in breathing, eye movement, etc.)
  • Then we begin the therapeutic work

That might include:

  • Visualisation
  • Storytelling for your subconscious
  • Gentle suggestions
  • Rehearsing situations in a different way

Everything is tailored to you. Nothing is random.

What can hypnotherapy help with?

Hypnotherapy can be incredibly effective for a wide range of issues; particularly anything linked to anxiety or learned responses.

Some of the most common things I help clients (both in Sandbach and online) with include:

  • Fears and phobias (especially fear of flying)
  • Anxiety and overthinking
  • Performance anxiety
  • Chronic pain
  • IBS and stress-related physical symptoms

One of my favourite things to work with is fear; it can be so limiting, and yet so changeable, and reasonably quickly!

Real Client Examples

  • Fear of flying:
One client was so anxious about an upcoming trip they were considering making themselves ill just to avoid it. After just two hypnotherapy sessions, they were able to look forward to their holiday, and enjoy it properly without worrying about the return journey.
  • Performance anxiety:
Another client’s job required them to perform in front of crowds, but anxiety was getting in the way. After several sessions working through different scenarios and responses, they described feeling like a completely different person.

How does hypnotherapy work?

We accept suggestions all the time, usually without realising it.

From childhood, we absorb messages about who we are, how we ‘should’ be, and what’s safe or unsafe. Over time, those messages sink in and become beliefs.

This is where neuroplasticity comes in:

The neurons that fire together, wire together.

The more something is repeated, the stronger that pathway becomes.

Hypnotherapy works by:

  • Helping you enter a deeply relaxed, focused state
  • Reducing the “critical factor” of the mind
  • Introducing new, more helpful suggestions
  • Repeating and reinforcing those suggestions

We’re essentially helping your brain to create new pathways, and then use those instead of the old ones – like when you see ‘desire paths’ in fields etc.

We also use the fact that the brain struggles to clearly distinguish between real and vividly imagined experiences, so when you visualise something strongly enough, your mind and body respond as if it’s real.

Which is incredibly useful when you want to change how you feel or react.

What hypnotherapy can’t do

Hypnotherapy isn’t mind control.

I can’t make you believe something that feels completely wrong to you. If your subconscious rejects a suggestion, it simply won’t stick.

Sometimes, if nothing changes after a few sessions, that’s actually a clue. It often means there’s something underneath, a reason your mind is holding onto the problem.

That’s where we get curious and explore further.

Why does hypnotherapy feel so powerful?

Even when you understand the science, it can still feel a bit like magic.

Because you can explain it logically…
and then watch someone shift something that’s been stuck for years.

It’s not magic.

But knowing how it works doesn’t make it feel any less like it.

Hypnotherapy in Cheshire – Is it right for you?

If you’re based in Cheshire and you’re curious about hypnotherapy, it’s completely normal to feel unsure.

Most people don’t quite know what to expect.

What I can say is this:

It’s not about losing control.
It’s about working with your mind in a more focused, intentional way.

And when it clicks, things can start to feel a lot easier. Often more quickly than people expect.
