Maybe you\u2019ve been struggling with anxiety, overthinking, or relationship patterns that don\u2019t seem to change. Maybe you\u2019re just tired of trying to figure everything out on your own.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If that\u2019s you, you\u2019re not alone. Most people arrive at therapy feeling uncertain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So, how do you know if counselling might actually help?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>A Good Starting Point: Curiosity<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In my experience, the clients who tend to get the most from counselling aren\u2019t the ones with the biggest problems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They\u2019re the ones who are <strong>willing to be curious about themselves.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Counselling isn\u2019t about a therapist fixing you (how many times do I need to say it: you\u2019re not broken!) or handing out life advice. Honestly, how on earth would I know exactly how you should live your life?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">My role is different. I ask questions. I notice patterns. I open doors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the client always holds the responsibility for:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">answering those questions honestly<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">exploring the doors that open<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">being willing to look at themselves with curiosity rather than judgement<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The people who often see the biggest shifts are the ones willing to say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>&#8220;Alright\u2026 maybe there\u2019s something here worth understanding.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That includes the parts of themselves they might not particularly like, and learning to meet those parts with a bit of kindness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cOther People Have It Worse\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is one I hear all the time. People will say something like:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>&#8220;There are loads of people who have it worse than me. I feel like I\u2019m wasting your time.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And yes, of course, there are people going through incredibly difficult things in the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>And also<\/em><\/strong>, that doesn\u2019t invalidate your experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I once saw a phrase that sums this up perfectly:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cJust because someone is drowning in the ocean and you\u2019re drowning in a puddle doesn\u2019t mean only one of you is drowning.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Struggling is struggling. You don\u2019t have to earn the right to talk about it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/carrynwilliams.com\/fr\/testimonials\/\">What Counselling Actually Looks Like<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some people imagine therapy as a place where the therapist sits silently while you talk. Others expect advice and practical instructions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In reality, it\u2019s usually something quite different.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many clients arrive hoping I\u2019ll tell them what to do. It wasn\u2019t as scary as I thought. And I\u2019m actually doing something to help myself.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That in itself can feel surprisingly good. But the deeper changes usually take a little time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Counselling often includes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">moments of real relief<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">moments of discomfort<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">moments of feeling deeply seen or understood<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">and sessions that feel fairly ordinary<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s rarely one dramatic transformation.
