You open a social media app out of slight boredom, or “just to check something,” and forty minutes later you surface, slightly dazed, with no memory of the last twenty of them. Somewhere along the way, ‘social’ turned into something else.

So, where’s the line? When does social media stop connecting us and start doing the opposite?

The highlight reel problem

Most people don’t post the school run meltdown or the argument about whose turn it is to empty the dishwasher. We post the things we want to remember, the things we want other people to see. The beach, the promotion, the beautifully plated dinner. Scroll through enough of that and you’re not comparing your life to someone else’s life – you’re comparing your behind-the-scenes to their highlight reel. That’s not a fair fight, and some part of you knows it, even while another part keeps scrolling and comparing anyway.

The “what if the next one’s amazing” trap

It’s not really the content of the reels and posts that keep your thumb moving – let’s be honest, a lot of it is utter crap – it’s the not knowing what’s coming next. Sometimes it’s a video that makes you laugh out loud. Sometimes it’s ninety seconds of nothing. You can’t predict which, so you keep going, just in case the next one’s the good one. FOMO, and all that.

That unpredictability isn’t an accident. It’s the same mechanism that makes slot machines so hard to walk away from. Psychologists call it variable ratio reinforcement, and it’s one of the most effective ways ever discovered to keep a creature (human or otherwise) repeating a behaviour. Your brain’s reward system lights up more from not knowing whether something good is coming than it does from the reward itself. Every pull-to-refresh is, mechanically, a lever pull. The apps aren’t secretly broken. They’re working exactly as designed, just not necessarily for your benefit. And because the reward is so random, you will keep going long after any rewards actually stop.

And the numbers back up what it feels like from the inside: recent research puts average daily social media use globally somewhere around two and a half hours, with plenty of people (particularly under-25s) well beyond that. This adds up to around 38 solid days per year – over a month of your life – poured into a screen, with no sleep, no eating, nothing else. Counted only against waking hours it’s closer to 2 and a half months. Imagine what else you could do with that time: take up a new hobby, read a few books, finally get to the gym?!

The shame-scroll-shame cycle

Here’s a pattern I see often in the therapy room. Someone finally puts the phone down, feels a flicker of right, productive afternoon starts now… and within minutes, without quite deciding to, they’ve picked it back up. Then comes the shame. Not really about the scrolling itself, but about the broken promise to themselves. And shame is uncomfortable, so maybe that now needs soothing too… and out comes the phone again.

This is the loop that turns social media antisocial: not the time itself, but the way it starts running the show instead of you.

What actually helps

It’s tempting to reach for willpower here. I know people who have deleted the apps, set a timer, downloaded a new app to lock down the (anti) social media apps… and sometimes that works. But in my experience, the more useful question isn’t “How do I stop?” but “What am I getting from this… and what is it costing me?”

For a lot of people, scrolling offers real relief: it’s a break from a hard day; from a difficult thought; from boredom that feels unbearable for even thirty seconds. That’s not nothing. The cost side of the ledger is usually less visible: the evening with a book you didn’t read; the conversation with a friend you didn’t have; the hour you can’t quite account for.

The other side of course, is the urge itself, that itch to open the app. Most of us either give in to it or fight it. What if I told you that there’s a third option… get curious about it instead. Sit with it for a moment before you act on it. Notice where it shows up in your body. It’s uncomfortable, isn’t it? Our mind can sometimes confuse that with danger, hence the urge to take action to make it stop. Urges that are met with curiosity and even a degree of acceptance tend to lose their grip faster than ones we either obey or battle.

So… when does social media become antisocial media? Roughly: the moment it stops being something you choose and becomes something that chooses for you. The good news is that moment is noticeable, if you’re willing to look for it. And once it’s noticeable, it’s workable.

If this sounds familiar…

If you recognise yourself in the shame-scroll cycle, or you’ve noticed you reach for your phone whenever a feeling gets uncomfortable, you’re not alone, and you don’t have to untangle it by yourself. This is exactly the kind of pattern I work with clients on, whether it shows up as scrolling, people-pleasing, or any other habit that’s become more automatic than chosen.
