How can hypnotherapy help with phobias?
Most phobias don’t seem to make logical sense, which is why talking alone is often not enough. You can logically know that something isn’t dangerous and still freeze up, or panic if it happens. That’s because phobias live in the subconscious mind, rather than the thinking brain.
Hypnotherapy works directly with the subconscious. In a calm and relaxed state, we can gently and safely update the way your mind responds to the trigger.
It’s not about making you forget the thing exists, it’s about changing your relationship with it, so that it no longer has that power over you.
What to expect
It won’t feel like “being put under”
It often feels different to how people think, hypnotherapy isn’t like stage hypnosis at all.
You are always in control, always aware, and always able to bring yourself out of it if you want to. Many people describe it as deeply relaxing, a bit like that floaty feeling when you are drifting off to sleep.
How many sessions will I need?
Fears and phobias often respond very quickly to hypnotherapy, most people see a significant change in just a session or 2.
What happens in a session?
We’ll start with a conversation about why you’ve come, when the phobia started, how it impacts you, and general likes and dislikes.
Then we will move into the hypnotherapy itself, working to relax you, and then gently reprogramme the fear response.
Around a week later we will check in about how you are feeling and what’s next.
This might be for you if…
- You’ve tried to push through a fear and it hasn’t worked
- You want results without months of talking
- You’re nervous about hypnotherapy (that’s OK, we will go at your pace)
- You have a specific event coming up (a flight, presentation, exams etc) and you want to feel calm going into it
- You’re exhausted by the way a fear or phobia is limiting your life
FAQ
Is hypnotherapy safe?
Generally yes—when conducted by trained, qualified practitioners. Side effects are rare but may include dizziness or emotional release. Hypnotherapy is not recommended for individuals experiencing active psychosis or certain severe mental health conditions.
Can you really treat a phobia in just a few sessions?
Often, yes, and this surprises many people. Because hypnotherapy works at the subconscious level rather than relying on conscious reasoning alone, change can happen much faster than in traditional talking therapy. Results vary, but 1–3 sessions is what I can have come to expect for phobia work.
I'm worried about being "out of control" during hypnosis. Is that a real thing?
This is one of the most common concerns, and the answer is no. You will always be in control, conscious, and able to stop the session if you want to. Hypnosis is a natural state of focused relaxation. You’ll be aware throughout.
What if I have a phobia that is embarrassing or unusual?
I’ve worked with all sorts of phobias, and I don’t judge. Whatever it is, you won’t be the first person to have it, and you are unlikely to shock me.
Do you offer online sessions for phobia treatment?
Yes, hypnotherapy works just as well online as in person. All you need is a quiet space, a comfortable seat, and a reliable internet connection. Many of my clients prefer it.
Can children or teenagers have phobia treatment?
Please get in touch to discuss, I’m happy to talk through whether this would be appropriate for your child’s situation.
Ready to change things?
You don’t have to keep living in and around fear. Whether it’s a fairly recent thing or you’ve been experiencing it for years, or it’s recently got worse, hypnotherapy can help and it might be quicker than you think!
